Sleepover Frenemies

—feeling traumatized :(

Junior Silver Rose Candidate Response Journal Page 21

The Silver Rose Foundation is an institution of sisterhood. Discuss how you have connected with fellow pledges.

They don't like me and the feeling is mutual.

Apparently it was some sort of great privilege to hold the annual Junior Silver Rose Retreat at your house. Mrs. Groves had been granted the honors this year, so because the universe hates me I would have to spend the night with Ava G.

When Mrs. Armstrong said we were going on a retreat, I was thinking more along the lines of camping or doing something outdoors. I should have known these girls would never do something like that.

Friday night I lay on the bed doubled over, clutching my stomach.

"Ray," I said in the weakest voice I could manage, "please go tell Aunt Jeanie that I'm dying. Hurry, I don't have much time left."

Ray ran from the room. "Aunt Jeanie, Bex is dying!" she yelled down the hallway.

Aunt Jeanie took an awful long time to come, considering I was on my deathbed. She stood over me and raised one eyebrow. "What is it, Bex?"

"My stomach and my head and my throat—they all hurt," I answered.

"Right. Are you sure you aren't just doing this to get out of the retreat?" Aunt Jeanie asked suspiciously.

"No. I've been looking forward to this all week."

Aunt Jeanie folded her arms across her chest. "Fine. I'll make your Nana's special home remedy and then we'll take you to the emergency room."

"The emergency room?"

"Yes," Aunt Jeanie answered. "If you're dying I think that qualifies as an emergency. Now I just need to run to the grocery store to pick up some cod liver oil, beets, bean sprouts, soy sauce, and liverwurst for the home remedy."

Okay. She wasn't buying my story.

I jumped up from the bed. "It’s a miracle! The pain just went away."

"That's what I thought," Aunt Jeanie said. "Let's go."

Aunt Jeanie felt the need to lecture me the entire way to the Groves' house. She was acting as if I had never been out of the house before. "Bex, please, none of your shenanigans and hijinks."

Hijinks? What were hijinks?

"Bex, are you listening to me?"

"Yes, Aunt Jeanie." But I wasn't. I was too busy thinking about how horrible this night was going to be.

"Bex, this is a big night and a good time for you to network and bond with the other girls. Please just be nice and act . . . normal," Aunt Jeanie said, as we pulled into the driveway.

"What does that mean? I always act normal."

"It means no telling any of your horrible scary stories. Do not start a food fight and do not get any of your bright ideas. Got it?"

"Sure, Aunt Jeanie," I sighed. I figured if I sat in a corner and kept to myself I couldn't do anything wrong.

Twenty girls swarmed into Ava's enormous living room with their sleeping bags. Everyone was there except for Geraldine. We had pizza and fudge sundaes and then we were to spend the rest of the night bonding with our "sisters.
